Red cog wheel train of Montenvers brings you to the Mer de Glace (14kms, 40 km2 and 200 m deep) surrounded by the mountains. On site you can visit an ice grotto, a cristal gallery and a fauna and alpine museum.

Brief history :
XI century : It was established as a Priory by the monks : 300 inhabitants.
In 1786 the first ascent of Mont Blanc launched the tourism in Chamonix.
From this time until the beginning of 20th century there was an explosion of wealthy tourism which attracted people like king Albert the 1st of Belgium, the English court. Also it brought many scientists, painters, writers like
George Byron, Victor Hugo, Charles Dickens who were inspired by Chamonix.
In less than 10 years 3 palaces
where built : The Savoy, the Majestic and the Chamonix Palace.
Beginning of 20th century, the development of winter sports with the First Olympic Games which took place
in Chamonix in 1924 thus followed the first paid holidays.
